aruda Indonesia will buy nine new planes through an operating lease scheme this year, Garuda president director Arief Wibowo has said.

Of the nine, five Airbus 320 planes will be added to the fleet of Citilink, a subsidiary company that operates budget planes, he added.

“The planes will be used to further expand Citilink, particularly to fulfill the domestic market,” said Arief as reported by tempo.co on Monday.

Another plane, a Boeing 737 Max, which is a new Boeing product that will be sent out in the third or fourth quarter of 2017, will be the first plane received by Indonesia, Arief added.

Meanwhile, three other smaller regional air transport (ATR) planes will be operating in eastern Indonesia, particularly in Papau and Maluku, he said.

“They will become feeders [to other Garuda planes] in the east,”  he said, adding that apart from expanding its domestic services, Garuda also planned to expand its international services, particularly to China and countries in the Middle East. (bbn)
