ational flag carrier Garuda Indonesia says that its services have not been disrupted despite a fire breaking out on one of its aircraft late Tuesday night as a backup aircraft has been deployed.
“The aircraft was quickly switched with a backup aircraft of a similar type to ensure that the airline’s operations were undisrupted. The backup aircraft flew the Jakarta-Singapore route on time at 6.10 a.m. this morning,” Garuda Indonesia VP corporate communications Benny S. Butarbutar said in an official statement on Wednesday.
At 11.27 p.m. on Tuesday night, the plane’s power unit (genset) went up in flames as ground workers conducted electric charging from a ground power unit (GPU) to Garuda Airbus A330-300 aircraft on the apron of Terminal 3, Soekarno Hatta International Airport, Banten. The GPU unit belongs to Garuda Indonesia subsidiary Gapura Angkasa.

Aviation security personnel and other workers put out the fire within around 10 minutes.
The aircraft was then taken into the hangar of Garuda Indonesia’s maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) subsidiary Garuda Maintenance Facility (GMF) to receive a thorough check.
“Garuda will also halt the use of similar types of GPUs until the investigation is over,” Benny added. (bbn)
