KPK accuses House of obstruction of justice by demanding to grill graft suspect. House, in return, accuses KPK of contempt of legislature
he Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has upped the ante in its row with the House of Representatives, accusing the legislative body of obstruction of justice by proceeding with its plan to question a graft suspect currently in the agency’s custody.
The House has sent a letter to the antigraft body demanding it bring Hanura Party politician Miryam S. Haryani to a hearing to be held by the House’s special committee tasked with launching a political inquiry into the KPK.
Miryam is a key witness in the KPK’s investigation into the e-ID graft case, which has implicated dozens of politicians, including House Speaker Setya Novanto.
On Monday, the KPK sent a letter signed by chairman Agus Rahardjo stating its refusal to comply with the House’s demand.
In the letter, which was read during the first inquiry committee hearing on Monday, the antigraft body argued that the House’s move could be classified as an obstruction of justice as it would impede its ongoing investigation into the e-ID graft case, which has reportedly cost the state Rp 2.3 trillion (US$173.1 million) in losses.
