The left eye of Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) lead investigator Novel Baswedan, who suffered burns to his left eye, face and neck after falling victim to an acid attack in April, has worsened, prompting doctors to consider having him undergo major surgery, KPK spokesman Febri Diansyah said on Thursday.

Two unidentified assailants on a motorcycle splashed acid at Novel's face as he was walking home from a mosque near his home in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta, on April 11. He has since been undergoing treatment at the Singapore National Eye Center.

Febri said Novel's left eye stopped growing new cells while the rights eye was improving, albeit very slowly.

"The left eye has become white," Febri said.

Thursday marks the 100th day since the attack took place. Febri said that KPK employees would gather in front of their office in South Jakarta late on Thursday to pray for Novel's recovery.

"We hope the perpetrators are arrested soon and all anti-corruption activists, including law enforcers, civil society and media workers, are safe from such attacks," Febri said.

The National Police have yet to name any suspects in the attack.

In June, Novel told TIME magazine that he had received information that “a police general – a high-level police official – was involved” in the attack on him.

National Police chief Gen. Tito Karnavian had asked Novel not to accuse anyone from the force without evidence. (yon/bbs)
