ndonesian Discount Day (HBDI), the first of its kind to be held in the country, is targeted to earn up to Rp 20 trillion (US$1.5 billion) in transactions when it sweeps across malls all over the country from Aug. 15 to 17.
The mega-sale, which will be staged annually, is expected to attract 20 million shoppers, according to its organizer, the Indonesian Shopping Center Tenants Association (Hippindo)
“Many countries have their own discount days, like the United States with Black Friday and Australia with Boxing Day. So, we need to have similar celebration, and I hope it can be held every year,” Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita said in his opening speech on Tuesday.
The inaugural HBDI involves almost all of Hippindo’s 200 members and their 500 brands.
A related event will be held at the Jakarta International Expo in North Jakarta, called the Happy Birthday Indonesia Festival (HBDIF), to coincide with Independence Day on Aug. 17.
Both HBDI and HBDIF will offer discounts of up to 72 percent and zero credit schemes using Mandiri credit cards. (bbn)
