akarta deputy governor-elect Sandiaga Uno has said he would ask his transition team to brief him on the latest developments in the Jakarta Bay land reclamation project, as the city administration had last week issued a certificate for right of building usage (HGB) to the developer of Islet D, PT Kapuk Naga Indah.

The Jakarta administration had earlier issued the right of management (HPL) certificate, necessary for the issuance of the HGB, but which had sparked controversy.

The resistance and opposition to the reclamation from several parties has caused uncertainty over the continuation of the mega project. Many environmentalists believe that the project will cause more harm than good.

“We are monitoring the rapid development of this plan, and frankly, I haven’t met my team yet, but they will brief me on it,” Sandiaga said on Tuesday, as quoted by kompas.com.

Sandiaga said that when he and governor-elect Anies Baswedan began their terms in October, they would not rush to make a decision on any policy. Instead, they would take the time to coordinate with any relevant institutions, as well as the government.

"One thing is certain: an environmental analysis should have been undertaken before the administration and PT Kapuk Naga Indah developed the Islet," he said. "But our stance is still the same, stopping the reclamation.” (hol)
