undreds of students enrolled at Ibnu Mas’ud Islamic boarding school in Tamansari district, Bogor, West Java, have been leaving one-by-one since last Monday after local authorities ordered the school to cease operations.
The school, which is known to educate the children of terrorists, sunk into deeper trouble after an official was seen burning red-and-white banners resembling the national flag.
On Sunday, the deadline set by local authorities for the school to cease operations, only around 15 students remained at the boarding school. They were students who hailed from areas outside Java.
School officials had also stopped teaching for the past week, according to Raafi Ardikoesoema, network coordinator of Amnesty International Indonesia, who was assigned to monitor the school.
“There have been no teaching activities, as around 140 students have left the school. Some students recite Quran verses by themselves. No organized programs run at the place, they just go about their individual activities,” Raafi told The Jakarta Post on Sunday.
The school was ordered to stop operations after a caretaker, identified as MS, was seen burning banners on Aug. 16, a day before Independence Day.
The incident sparked anger from locals, who stormed the school the following day, along with Tamansari subdistrict and village leaders, forcing school officials to sign a pact stating they would disband the school within a month.
