ore than half way toward the end of his presidency in 2019, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s approval rating remains stable, with most of his macroeconomic performances having been rated positively, though social welfare issues remain a problem.
According to a survey commissioned by pollster Indikator Politik Indonesia, Jokowi’s approval rating in September was 68 percent, which was relatively similar to his approval rating last year.
From April 2016 to September this year, Jokowi’s approval rating was stable, fluctuating only between 64 and 68 percent in a survey based on interviews with 1,220 respondents across Indonesia from Sept. 17 to 24, Indikator revealed on Wednesday.
Jokowi’s rating only saw major ups and downs during his first year in office. The lowest point was in June 2015 when it dropped to 41 percent from 62 percent in January of the same year.
Jokowi’s high rating in September was primarily thanks to his efforts to improve the economy, which were seen in a good light by the survey respondents, Indikator executive director Burhanuddin Muhtadi said.
The survey found 43.3 percent of respondents said the economy this year was better compared to the year before, 34.1 percent thought it was on the same level as the past and 18.4 percent believed it was worse.
An even higher number respondents, 65 percent, said they believed the economy would get better and only 5 percent said it would get worse.
