he Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) detained House of Representatives Speaker and graft suspect Setya Novanto on Sunday evening after a team of doctors from the Indonesian Doctors Association (IDI) concluded that the politician was fit to undergo questioning.
KPK deputy chairman Laode Muhammad Syarif said physicians from the Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital (RSCM) and the IDI had assessed the health of the Golkar Party politician for three days, after the politician was admitted to hospital following a car accident on Thursday night.
“After conducting numerous assessments, we decided to detain the suspect. He will be transferred from the hospital to the detention center tonight,” Laode said at a press conference at RSCM on Sunday night.
IDI secretary-general M. Adib Khumaidi, who was present at the press conference, said the association had formed a team of experts to examine Setya’s condition, as requested by the KPK on Friday. “The results serve as a second opinion to the RSCM's assessment.”
According to Antara news agency, investigators escorted Setya to the KPK on Sunday evening for questioning. Upon his arrival, the seasoned politician was seen in a wheelchair wearing a orange detainee vest.
“I thought I would be given time for recovery. I’m still suffering from vertigo, but I’m obeying the law,” Setya said after undergoing questioning, as quoted by Antara.
The KPK had placed Setya in custody while he was receiving treatment at RSCM on Friday, after he reportedly tried to evade arrest when a team of investigators visited his house on Wednesday evening.
