resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and Brunei Darussalam ruler Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah are set to deliberate an agreement on the placement and protection of migrant workers.
Jokowi is scheduled to host a bilateral meeting with Bolkiah on Thursday, in which the state leaders plan to talk about how to build better cooperation with migrant workers. “They will discuss the placement and protection of Indonesian migrant workers,” said Foreign Minister Retno Lestari Priansari Marsudi on Wednesday.
The results of the discussion will then be followed up and formulated into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) by the countries’ foreign ministers, Retno added. “Hopefully, the draft will be finished in the near future,” she said. Brunei has 80,000 Indonesians working there, while its population is only 400,000, Retno said.
Apart from the migrant worker issue, Jokowi and Bolkiah plan to highlight economic and investment cooperation.
In the meeting, Jokowi is also expected to offer Bokliah cooperation on Indonesia’s strategic industries, Retno said.
