P

resident Joko "Jokowi" Widodo opened the 2018 Our Ocean Conference at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center by announcing that the nation had realized its ambitious target of establishing 20 million hectares of ocean for conservation.

“This is two years earlier than targeted,” Jokowi said during his opening speech on Monday.

It took nine years for the government to realize the target. The ambitious objective was announced by then-president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in 2009 as the nation’s commitment during that year's World Ocean Conference.

In his speech Jokowi said the government was determined to play a key role in the global maritime force through the country's maritime policy and action plan.

The 20-million-hectare achievement is part of the nation’s commitment to marine protection and sustainability.

“The government must be brave to make a concrete commitment to conservation,” he said. (evi)
