hile it's not really a desired travel destination for most people, the curiosity regarding North Korea has always been high among travellers. Jaka Krisnadi, an Indonesian who was a resident of Pyongyang for four years, shares some tips on what to prepare for your North Korean trip.

The right currency

Make sure you have enough cash in US dollars, Chinese yuan, Japanese yen, or euro. These currencies are accepted by the merchants in North Korea and you'll need cash to buy food, drink and souvenirs.

Warm clothes

Warm clothes, including jackets with padding, are a necessity if you are visiting the country in winter. The winter in North Korea is very cold and dry and some of the heaters in the buildings may not work properly, so it is important to keep yourself as warm as possible at all times.

Formal clothes

As there may be instances when you will be led by your tour guide to visit sacred areas, for example the graves of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il, you will need to dress formally and neatly.

Medicines

It is not easy to find hospitals or clinics in North Korea. Bring your own medicine and include medicine for diarrhea, flu and headaches on your list.

Camera

Contrary to what most people think, North Korea actually allows you to bring your camera and video recorders. However, you will not be allowed to bring lenses larger than 250 millimeters.

Cigarettes and candies

Although they are not prerequisite items, it may be a good idea to bring cigarettes and candies with you, as these are often given to the tour guide — cigarettes to men and candies to women. This will build good relations with the guides.

Attitude

There is no need to be too rigid and it is okay to act as you normally do. However, refrain from asking your guide about political issues and negative portrayals of North Korea. (asw)
