ational flag carrier Garuda Indonesia announced on Tuesday plans to increase seasonal flight frequencies from Indonesia to Australia.

From May until October, the airline will add one additional flight to its Jakarta-Australia and Bali-Australia routes, along which it currently operates four and six flights per week, respectively. Among the routes are Jakarta-Sydney, Denpasar-Sydney, Jakarta-Melbourne, Denpasar-Melbourne, Jakarta-Perth and Denpasar-Perth. The additional flight schedule will be dependent on market demand during the holiday season period, hence the numbers will be different in each period.

Garuda Indonesia CEO M. Arif Wibowo said in a press release that the additional flight frequencies were in line with demand for the Australian market, adding that the move aimed to accommodate increased traffic between the two countries. He also mentioned that last year Indonesia-Australia routes had experienced a passenger growth rate of 17 percent compared to a similar period in 2015.

“The enhancement of our services to Australia will offer our customers a wider choice of flight schedules and ultimately greater travel convenience to Australia,” said Arif in a press release on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Australian Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, Hon Steven Ciobo MP, said, “Indonesia is one of Australia’s fastest-growing markets for international visitors, as well as Australia’s 12th largest market for international visitor arrivals. Indonesia has the potential to be worth over US$1 billion in overnight visitation by 2020 and we hope that today’s announcement by Garuda Indonesia will help us achieve that." (kes)
