Pujon Kidul is a tourism village located in the district of Pujon in Malang regency, East Java.

In past years, Malang has been developing tourist villages and one of them is the 323,159-hectare Pujon Kidul.

A quick Google search for this place will show you that Pujon Kidul is now renowned for its cafes that offer a stunning view of lush green paddy fields, attracting an average of 3,000 visitors on weekends and 500 visitors during weekdays. The eateries also contribute by providing jobs for the villagers since one café can employ about 33 people, most of whom are local teenagers and young adults.

“We work together with the Malang Cultural and Tourism Agency to educate these young people to run a café and how to serve guests,” said the head of the Pujon Kidul Tourism Village Institute, Syamsul Hadi.

Apart from working at cafés, locals also make a living by dairy farming, cultivating herbs and harvesting fruit like passion fruit, apples and guava.

Ever since becoming a tourist village, Pujon Kidul's income was up to Rp 80 million (US$6,022) last year, which is the highest of the 377 other villages in the Malang regency.

The income is collected from parking services, warung fees and homestay taxes. Currently the village hosts 55 homestays and is planning to have up to 100 homestays by this year.

With so many creative endeavors this village has produced, Pujon Kidul was named the winner of the Climate Village Program (Proklim) by the Environment and Forestry Ministry in December 2016. (kes)
