Following the lead of Yogyakarta, Malang and Semarang, Palembang in South Sumatra is creating its own brightly colored kampong.

Dubbed Kampoeng Warno-Warni, the project is part of the city's preparation as the host of the 2018 Asian Games. Many companies, including house paint brand Cat Propan, have agreed to sponsor it.

The project, which has been underway for quite some time now, was initiated by volunteers from the Gemilang Peduli Asian Games community. The Kampoeng Warno-Warni is located in Seberang Ulu district, directly facing Kuto Besak Fort.

Palembang and Jakarta have been appointed as host cities for the 2018 Asian Games, which will run from August 18 to September 2.

During a recent meeting, Palembang Deputy Mayor Harnojoyo mentioned tourism as one of the priorities in preparing for the sports event.

Nine tourism development programs have been prepared by the Palembang city council to beautify the city's attractions, which include restoring Kuto Besak Fort and revamping the Musi River area.

Other tourism programs that have been successfully implemented are the creation of a pedestrian area on Jl. Sudirman, known as Palembang’s version of Singapore’s Orchard Road, and the Al Quran Al Akbar religious tourist site in Gandus. (kes)
