apua is gearing up for the 10th cultural Sentani Lake Festival (FDS) that will be held on June 19-23 at the Khalkhote tourism site in East Sentani.

“The theme chosen for FDS 2017 is ‘Cipta Harmoni Budaya’ [Creating Cultural Harmony] that aims to invite society to create harmony in the state and national integration of Indonesia,” explained Jayapura Culture and Tourism Department head Chris Kores Tokoro.

This year, a tribal house was chosen as the festival’s icon.

FDS 2017 will present a cultural parade, art performances, tourist site photography, arts and sports competitions and promotions for the National Games (PON) XX Papua.

There will be traditional dances performed on boats, such as the Papuan war dance, as well as traditional ceremonies like the Ondoafi coronation and Papuan traditional dishes.

The first day of the festival will have a show performed by Indonesians from various cultural backgrounds.

The Sentani Lake Festival has so far made a positive impact on the economic growth of Sentani,

“Ever since it was held for the first time in 2012, there has been an increase in the area’s economic activity. In 2015, the local economy stood at Rp 8 billion [US$602,228], in 2016 it was Rp 11 billion and this year’s target is Rp 15 billion,” said Tokoro. (asw)
