The number of foreign tourist arrivals in North Sulawesi in May reportedly increased by up to 449 percent from last year.
The regency's Central Statistics Agency (BPS) Statistics and Distribution head, Marthedy Tenggehi, said most of the visitors were from China, Germany and Singapore.
“In May 2017, North Sulawesi welcomed 4,396 tourists from China, 176 tourists from Singapore and 138 tourists from Germany,” said Marthedy.

Other nationals visiting the region in May included United States (106 people), United Kingdom (87 people), Hong Kong (74 people), Malaysia (67 people), Australia (64 people), Netherlands (62 people) and France (47 people).
Most of the tourists reportedly entered through Sam Ratulangi International Airport. “The increasing number of tourists is also due to the increased number of direct flights to Manado,” he added.
Enjoying local cuisine, hiking and lake-hopping are said to be the most popular activities among these tourists.
“The majority of foreign tourists who stay in Manado for six days were interested in visiting Bunaken, Lake Tondano and Lake Linow. Other popular activities include visiting cultural sites and going on a city tour to Mantos, Christ Blessing Statue in Citraland, Chinese Village and the Boulevard area," said Marthedy. (kes)
