The SuperStar Libra cruise ship carrying 700 foreign tourists docked at Kuala Tanjung international hub port in Batubara regency in North Sumatra on Thursday morning.
The ship was the first to dock at the port, which will soon be inaugurated by the government.
Malay dances greeted the passengers, who were also given ulos (traditional Batak cloth) as a souvenir.
Arriving at 5:55 a.m., the ship stayed at the port for 11 hours. Most of the visitors explored Medan on shopping and culinary excursions.
North Sumatra Deputy Governor Nurhajizah Marpaung, who was at the welcoming event, told The Jakarta Post that the SuperStar Libra's arrival opens opportunities for other cruise ships to dock at the port, as well as increase the number of foreign tourists visiting North Sumatra, especially Lake Toba.
State-owned port operator PT Pelindo I president director Bambang Eka Cahyana said the port was projected to help increase international interactions in West Indonesia.
"We have made the necessary preparations to welcome cruise ships at this port. Hopefully there will be more to come," said Bambang. (kes)
