AirAsia cancels 22 flights following Mount Agung eruption

Low-cost airline AirAsia announced it had canceled 22 flights to and from Bali's I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar, as well as others that had been postponed, following Mount Agung's latest eruption.

ollowing the eruption of Mount Agung in Bali on Wednesday, low-cost carrier AirAsia announced that it had canceled 22 flights to and from I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar, as well as others that had been postponed. 

"Due to the recent eruption of Mount Agung in Bali, Indonesia, several AirAsia flights scheduled to arrive to and to depart from I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, Denpasar are affected," the airline said in a statement on Thursday.

Affected flights include those between Indonesia's popular resort island and its neighboring cities, namely Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with flights AK 370, AK 317, AK 378, AK 379, QZ 555; Bali and Singapore flights QZ 507, QZ 508, QZ 509; Bali and Perth, Australia, flights, QZ 536, QZ 537; Bali and Jakarta flights QZ 7533, QZ 7534, XT 7516, XT 7517, XT 7518, XT 7519, XT 7522, XT 7523; Bali and Surabaya flights XT 7624, XT 7625; Bali and the Philippine capital of Manila, flights Z 2231 and Z 2232. 

Meanwhile, flights FD 398 and FD 399 between Bali and Bangkok, Thailand, as well as Perth to Bali flight QZ 545 and Kuala Lumpur to Bali flight QZ 557 have been postponed.

The airline said passengers would be notified of their flight status via email and text message, while advising guests to update all contact details on the AirAsia website to ensure they receive notifications. 

Passengers of canceled flights have also been given the option to either reschedule flights, reroute their journey or accept a refund or credit. 

Mt. Agung also emitted smoke up to 1,500 meters above its peak on Thursday.  

According to kompas.comit’s eruption on Wednesday evening spewed volcanic ash up to 2,000 meters high. (liz/kes)
