Populism and religious conservatism is driven by fear that women are taking jobs that traditionally belonged to men, blue-collar and white-collar jobs alike.
security scare occurred during the Women’s March in Bandung, West Java, on March 4. A man drove his bicycle at speed toward the marchers and yelled some abuse.
Later, he boasted on his Instagram account that he was “raiding” the “SJWs” (social justice warriors). He said he was upset that they were promoting a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) agenda despite Indonesia being a Muslim-majority country.
He apologized days later, saying that he did not know what the march was about, but he didn’t like to see an LGBT flag.
Interestingly, while at first people thought he was motivated by conservative Islam, his account name featured a Russian flag and he used a couple of Russian pen names. Some people identified him as a “Russia geek”.
