ith forty years of developing Batam, the Batam Indonesia Free Zone Authority (BP Batam) has been managing the infrastructures and facilities in catering to the needs of industries and local communities. Providing clean water and managing a waste treatment plant in Batam for basic necessities.
Water in the region was under the concession of BP Batam to a private water management company PT Adhya Tirta Batam (ATB) for 25 years, from 1995-2020.
The company has become the best water management companies in Indonesia with 99.5 percent coverage of more than 250,000 consumers.
As for the waste water treatment plant, the increasing access to sanitation facilities for urban and rural communities is one of the major priorities of the Indonesian government. In the Sanitation Road Map for urban areas, the government has set a specific target to increase the number of cities with piped sewerage systems, and one of the cities to do so is in Batam.

Currently Batam’s population is more than 1 million people (about 1.2 million in 2015). The population has been increasing rapidly, which has led to plenty of housing developments, while industries and other development activities have been progressing – this explains the urgent need to implement any water and waste water management projects in Batam.
The status of Batam Wastewater Treatment Plan Stage 1 Project is ongoing toward the next step (construction phase) and it will be completed in 2018.
Under the Batam Wastewater Investment Master Plan, Stage 1 project has been done in Batam Centre, Bengkong and Sei Beduk, and it will continue to the 2nd stage.
