nyone itching for a holiday outside Indonesia need not to look further than South Korea, one of the most tourist-friendly countries in the world. The country has all the perfect ingredients to become one of the most sought-out destinations in the world, with qualities such as: low crime rate, foreigner-friendly signs, wi-fi heaven, convenient public transport and more.

According to World Population Review, the average crime rate per 100,000 people is 44.74. South Korea’s crime index is at 26.68, making it one of the safest countries in the world. Additionally, it is fairly easy to find "tourist police" in every major tourist area, whose main job description is to help tourists and foreigners.

Jet-lag will not be a problem as Korea can be considered as a country that never sleeps, where anyone can get what they need at all hours of the night. Many convenience stores, restaurants, malls and ATMs are open 24/7 all year-round. The fast and convenient food delivery services also make it easy to have anything delivered to pretty much anywhere.

One of the worst things that could happen to a tourist is to be stranded and lost. In part thanks to the tourist police, this scenario is a rarity in South Korea. Most public places in South Korea have signs in English and other languages, such as Japanese and Chinese. Additionally, subway stations and public facilities offer fast and free Wi-Fi for all. Moreover, extensive subway networks, a nationwide-railroad system and express and intercity buses keep the entire country well-connected.

There are many advanced-medical facilities staffed with skilled health-care professionals offering top-notch medical services, so everyone will be in good hands. The modern country also makes it easy for tourists to purchase or pay for anything, as cash is not a necessity. Excluding a couple of very small family-owned businesses, every single shop in the country accepts credit cards.

As for what to do in Korea, there is an activity for everyone. Those who are devoted to K-drama, like the rest of the world, can visit film locations from famous dramas. Reply 1988 fans will definitely see some familiar sites when they visit Uijeongbu City in the Gyeonggi Province, where the filming actually took place. Meanwhile, those who are fond of Winter Sonata will want to visit Nami Island, located 60 kilometers northeast of Seoul.

It is easy to get caught up in the glamorous tour of K-drama locations, but do not leave out the UNESCO historical sites. Travel back in time by visiting Changdeokgung Palace Complex, Baekje historic areas, Seokguram Grotto and Bulguksa Temple of the past. To really immerse yourself and bask in the cultural heritage of Korea, these places also offer the chance to take part in the royal ancestral ritual in the Jongmyo Shrine and listen to traditional folk music.

No one can talk about Korea and not mention their world-famous cuisine. Almost everyone is familiar with spicy kimchi and the deliciousness of bibimbap and bulgogi, but sannakji is not for the faint of hearts. Literally translated as “live octopus”, sannakji is a plate of finely chopped octopus seasoned with sesame oil and seeds. When the tentacles wiggle and move, do not worry, because that is part of the fun of sannakji. Foodies will want to discover more of what Korea has to offer by going on culinary tours at night markets and in between shopping trips when the sun is up. Do not count anything out in different cities, as the dish served at the Busan Bupyeong Kkangtong Night Market will be different from the ones served in Noryangjin Fisheries Wholesale Market in Seoul. The variety itself is part of the country’s charm.

The last must-do activity on the list is to prioritize self-care; try out the relaxing age-old traditional Korean medicine and healing meditation for a mental-health respite. Tourists who prefer serenity over the city will want to visit Seogwipo healing forest in Jeju, Geumgangsong Ecorium in Uljin or Yongpyong ski resort in Pyeongchang. Furthermore, Hallasan Mountain is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve site that is home to one of the purest forests in Korea. The special site is also home to the WE Hotel Wellness Center.

When the strolls through the beautiful scenery are not enough, stop by the Meditation Hall in Museum SAN to reconnect with one’s “inner self”, or Vista Walkerhill Wellness Club in Seoul, where they offer sustainable health-management solutions based on expertise and distinguished facilities.

The traditional-healing methods in Korea are all about herbs and tea. A stay in Donguibogam village can relieve fatigue with herbal spa, oriental medicine and the taste of medicinal herbs. Meanwhile, Seoul K-Medi Center offers a variety of exhibitions and experiences and home to 70 percent of Korean herbal medicines traded in Korea.

If a cup of tea is not soothing enough, Korea also offers luxurious spas such as Paradise City Cimer that offers Korean-style dry sauna with European-style spa, SPA 1899 Donginbi that champions red ginseng and traditional methods for beauty and relaxation and Forest Resom Have9 Healing Spa, which as aforementioned, surrounds you with the beauty of nature for serenity and peace.

From the glamorous historical palaces, to the serenity of the mountains and forest, South Korea has everything to offer. The beautiful sites, coupled with the tourist-friendly accommodation may put a trip to South Korea on the average person’s travel wish-list.
