T Pertamina (Persero) is currently studying the possibility of increasing the octane rating of subsidized RON 90 fuel to RON 92. This is done by combining Pertalite with 7 percent ethanol to produce Pertamax green 92. The Langit Biru Program Phase 2 study is still being undertaken internally and has not yet been completed.

“This program is the result of Pertamina’s internal research, and there has been no official decision made by the government. Of course, we will propose this and discuss this matter further,” explained Pertamina president director and CEO Nicke Widyawati while attending a hearing with House of Representatives Commission VII in Jakarta on Aug. 30.

Nicke added that if the proposal is discussed and becomes a government program, its price will certainly be regulated by the government. “It is not possible for Special Assignment Fuel [JBKP] to have its price determined by the market because of the subsidy and compensation mechanisms within,” Nicke explained.

According to Nicke, the study is being conducted to produce higher quality fuel, as fuel with a higher octane rating is expected to be more environmentally friendly.

“If, for example, at the same price, the public gets better quality with a higher octane number, which is also better for engines, the result will be reduced emissions. However, this is just a proposal, so is not meant as an argument,” Nicke explained.

Nicke emphasized that Langit Biru Program Phase 2 is a Pertamina internal study, and its implementation will be proposed to the government in the near future because, ultimately, the decision-making authority rests with the government.
