A

uthorities have geared up for aftershocks following a powerful earthquake in the Maluku Sea that struck parts of North Sulawesi and North Maluku on Thursday morning, killing one person and triggering a tsunami warning.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the earthquake struck at 6:48 a.m. Central Indonesia Time. Its epicenter was located in the Maluku Sea between Sulawesi and Maluku islands at a depth of 33 kilometers.

Strong tremors were felt for up to 20 seconds in Bitung, North Sulawesi, and its neighboring areas.

Local residents reported seawater retreating by up to 10 meters from the coastline after the earthquake, prompting residents living in the coastal area to rush out of their homes for safety, as described by the National Search and Rescue Agency’s (Basarnas) North Sulawesi regional office in a statement on Thursday.

The BMKG issued a tsunami warning after the earthquake, placing several regions under the “high alert” status of a tsunami hazard of up to 3 m, including Ternate, Halmahera and Tidore in North Maluku, as well as Bitung and parts of Minahasa in North Sulawesi.
