ertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE), the sub-holding of PT Pertamina (Persero), focusing on new and renewable energy, is collaborating with PT VKTR Teknologi Mobilitas Tbk (VKTR), a pioneer in commercial and public electric vehicle (EV) mobility and a subsidiary of the Bakrie Group. The two companies announced a breakthrough partnership on Monday (13/11). This alliance is dedicated to pioneering sustainable mobility solutions for public transportation in Indonesia. The partnership, formalized through a letter of interest (LoI) to the United States International Development Finance Corporation (US DFC), is a strategic effort to achieve Indonesia's net-zero emissions target by 2060.

Jakarta, as a city with dense activity, the decarbonization of transportation is a crucial step in improving urban air quality.

In line with President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo's directive to accelerate the electrification of public transportation, as stipulated in Presidential Regulation No. 55/2019 and Presidential Instruction No. 7/2022, this collaboration is timely and significant.

With the number of buses exceeding 260,000, Indonesia presents a significant opportunity for the penetration of electric buses. This partnership introduces an innovative e-MaaS (electric Mobility as a Service) model, offering flexible financing for the operation and maintenance of electric buses, thereby reducing dependence on government funding.

VKTR CEO Gilarsi W. Setijono stated at the signing of the LoI in Washington, DC, “The combination of our expertise in public transportation electrification and renewable energy uniquely positions us to lead transformative solutions in Indonesia. We are committed to facilitating  comprehensive EV infrastructure, transitioning from a CAPEX [capital expenditure] to an OPEX [operating expenses] model, and making a significant contribution to the Indonesian economy.”

Pertamina NRE CEO Dannif Danusaputro added,  “Pertamina NRE is dedicated to achieving net-zero emissions by 2060 or even earlier. We focus on decarbonizing challenging sectors through low-carbon solutions, the development of renewable energy and building a future business that includes electric vehicles, batteries, environmentally friendly hydrogen and carbon. We believe that this collaboration will accelerate our efforts.”

This partnership aims to assist entities such as TransJakarta and the new capital city, Nusantara, in developing the necessary infrastructure for the widespread adoption of EVs. The e-MaaS model is not limited to vehicles; this project includes crucial infrastructure such as charging stations and renewable energy sources, offering holistic and cost-effective solutions for major cities in Indonesia.

The collaborative efforts through e-MaaS are ready for implementation across various sectors, driving environmentally friendly transportation projects and electrification transformation. Its scalability also paves the way for expansion into other regions, thus fostering a robust and sustainable ecosystem for environmentally friendly transportation.

Pertamina Coorporate Communication vice president Fadjar Djoko Santoso added, “this collaboration realizes one of Pertamina's sustainability initiatives, which is to build an EV ecosystem in Indonesia. "We hope that this partnership can drive the growth of the energy mix towards new renewable energy in the automotive industry, especially public transportation. This way, emissions from vehicles can be further reduced,” he concluded.
