Joined by United States Ambassador to Indonesia Sung Kim and Canadian Ambassador Nadia Burger, Airlangga visited Batam Aero Technics (BAT) facilities at Hang Nadim International Airport and Nongsa Digital Park (NDP), two special economic zones set up on the island.
Airlangga said that the two special economic zones were well-prepared to host investors planning to work on semiconductors, the digital economy as well as aircraft maintenance.
Nongsa Digital Park hosts the Infinite Studio, a privately-run movie studio working on animation and feature films, which is considered to be the biggest in Southeast Asia.
"We are also preparing more data centers in this location," Airlangga said.
Airlangga added that a number of international companies had made a commitment to invest in the digital park, including some firms which planned to invest in cloud computing and artificial intelligence.
As for the BAT facility, the senior economic minister said that once it's fully operational, it could be the hub for aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul which could produce more than 9,000 jobs by 2030.
The facility's proximity to Hang Nadim Airport would allow aircraft to have better access to fuel, runway and electricity that would allow for more efficient maintenance work.
"Batam Aero Technics today can handle 600 engines, so now it has its own captive market," Airlangga said.
