illages, Disadvantaged Regions and Transmigration Minister A Halim Iskandar has showcased Indonesia’s localization of sustainable development goals (SDGs) at the village level at the United Nations headquarters in New York. Seen as an authentic answer to the implementation of concrete sustainable development, the village-level localization of SDGs in Indonesia has been an exemplary achievement toward sustainability.

Taking place from July 10-20 the 2023 High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development was the event where Indonesia showcased its progress in SDG localization. Attended by delegates from 196 countries, the forum served as a global stage where countries could share plans and strategies regarding sustainable development.

Indonesia presented an exhibition of nationwide SDG achievements down to the village level and conducted a seminar titled "Driving Changes at the Local Level: Innovative Approaches to Localizing SDGs."

With COVID-19 disrupting all facets of life throughout 2020 up until 2022, collective pessimism arose regarding the achievement of SDGs by the year 2030.

It can be identified that this pessimism contributed to the indicators of poor macro development, such as the recent trend of negative or low global economic growth, the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, the hindered access to basic education and healthcare facilities, and long gestating unresolved environmental issues.

"What is often overlooked is the fact that national and global indicators are often a collection of local conditions, from regional and village levels to communities, families and individuals. Therefore, the alternative proposed this time, to ensure the achievement of the 2030 goals, is to first localize SDGs from villages to the lowest levels of governance," explained Halim Iskandar.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres gave a speech during the forum, stating, "State leaders must optimize various high-level meetings that have been conducted, such as the climate summit, food summit, G20, G7, and so on. The outcomes of these high-level meetings must be translated into action because that is the commitment we need to realize to achieve the SDGs."

"Furthermore, I strongly hope that no country will be absent at the SDGs Summit in September 2023. We greatly need solidarity and strong political commitment to realize the various mechanisms and instruments that we have designed, including a $5 billion SDGs stimulus package, to be properly implemented," he continued.

President of the Economic and Social Council, Lachezara Stoeva, who chaired the session in the UN General Assembly Hall, added, "This High-Level Political Forum is the primary platform for fulfilling our commitments to SDGs. This is the right momentum we need in order to reaffirm our commitment to various crucial elements. I hope we can continue to have that ambition, the ambition to keep the promises we have agreed upon together to achieve sustainable development goals by 2030."
