fficials from the United States and Indonesia discussed cooperation plans related to critical minerals, cyber and maritime security and semiconductors in Washington on Monday local time.
In a joint statement, officials said both countries shared views on the importance of secure supply chains, critical and green infrastructure and regional economic security, as well as the threat posed by the climate crisis and the need to accelerate the clean energy transition.
“To address these challenges and reduce emissions, officials from both countries discussed next steps to realize new cooperation initiatives related to critical minerals, cyber and maritime security, semiconductors, the innovative Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) and small modular reactors,” they said.
The talk was made during what they say to be the first-ever Senior Officials’ Foreign Policy and Defense Dialogue.
The two sides said they reaffirmed both nations’ intent to elevate the US-Indonesia relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership to further deepen cooperation across a range of sectors.
Foreign Ministry Director General for American and European Affairs Ambassador Umar Hadi and Defense Ministry Director General for Defense Strategy Maj. General Bambang Trisnohadi led the Indonesian delegation, while the US delegation was led by Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel Kritenbrink and Assistant Secretary of Defense for Indo-Pacific Security Affairs Dr. Ely Ratner.
Last month, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo asked the US to kick start work on a critical minerals agreement (CMA), as Indonesia seeks to retain its electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing competitiveness against other producer countries.
