omestic tourists are expected to make fewer trips to local destinations this year than the government had targeted, the Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry has announced.

Ministry official Vinsensius Jemadu said at a press briefing on Monday that the government had initially targeted between 1.2 billion and 1.4 billion trips from domestic tourists this year, but after evaluating the figures, reaching the target would be “very difficult”.

Instead, the government hoped to record at least 1 billion trips by domestic tourists by year-end, he said.

“We are optimistic, through December, to reach 1 billion trips. We will evaluate for next year to figure out the steps that must be taken to reach 1.2 billion to 1.4 billion trips,” said Vinsensius, adding that next year’s target would be the same as this year’s initial figure.

Statistics Indonesia (BPS) had recorded only 626 million domestic tourist trips as of September, leaving a gap of some 600 million to reach the lower end of the initial government target.

The figure marks a jump of 12.81 percent from the same period last year but remains below the full-year 2022 figure of 734.86 million domestic trips.
