tate-owned electricity company PLN will collaborate with PowerChina International Group Limited (PowerChina) to develop wind energy in Indonesia.
The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Thursday to carry out a joint feasibility study of the business prospects of wind energy in Indonesia.
Indonesia has potential wind energy resources amounting to 155 gigawatts (GW), the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry estimates. However, as of 2021, only 154.3 megawatts (MW), or 0.1 percent of the total potential, have been utilized, according to a ministry report.
PLN president director Darmawan Prasodjo said exploration of potential renewable energy resources was critical in helping Indonesia mitigate the climate crisis and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
“We will be up against the challenges of the climate crisis together. Thus, we are committed to building a strong partnership to turn the challenge into an opportunity,” he said in a statement issued on Monday.
PLN and PowerChina, a subsidiary of the state-owned Power Construction Corporation of China, will also conduct a joint study on offshore wind facilities in the Indian Ocean and the Pacific, as well as other renewable energy plants, such as hydro, biomass, solar and wave power.
“We have the same vision to be successful in the energy transition journey. We hope this collaboration will improve strategic cooperation between Indonesia and China in the development of wind power and other forms of renewable energy to support Indonesia’s energy transition,” Ruly Firmansyah, the president director of PLN Nusantara Power, said in the statement.
