Indonesia eyes more hydro-floating solar hybrid projects in 2024

ndonesia will continue harnessing its large potential of floating solar photovoltaics (PV) in dams and hydropower plants in the country, in a move to increase renewable energy power generation in the grid.
The country boasts a total capacity potential of 14.7 gigawatts (GW) from hybrid floating solar PV placed on dams and hydropower plants, which alone hold the potential to generate 6 GW, Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry data show.
Solar PV, whose total capacity is targeted to reach 4,680 megawatts (MW) by 2030, is the second-largest contributor to the renewable energy development plan laid out in state-owned electricity company PLN’s 2021-2030 long-term electricity procurement plan (RUPTL).
The Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry’s various renewable energy director, Andriah Feby Misna, said the government would offer more hybrid floating solar plant projects in 2024, as stipulated in the RUPTL.
These hybrid floating solar power plants include plants to be located in Singkarak in West Sumatra, Saguling in West Java and Karangkates in East Java, Feby explained.
“At the moment, the main challenge in finding investors for these projects is the local content requirement [TKDN] rule,” she told The Jakarta Post in Jakarta on Thursday, in response to a question about hurdles the ministry faced to move the projects forward.
