Moo-ve over old ways: Empowering dairy farmers like never before!

Indonesia has always savored its dairy products, which come from the thousands of dairy farmers across the archipelago.

To ensure the steady stream of milk to Indonesian households, numerous initiatives supporting local dairy farmers have cropped up over the years, ranging from educational projects to technical support.

One such example is the Milk Procurement and Dairy Development (MPDD), which supports local dairy farmers in East Java. Dating back to 1975, the partnership was pioneered by Nestlé Indonesia, and involves providing technical aid and additional support while also focusing on preserving the environment.

MPDD, a division of Nestlé, has played a crucial role in the ongoing growth of Nestlé Indonesia, actively fostering support and assistance for those in need. The initiative reflects a broader commitment towards fostering regenerative food systems that aim not just to safeguard, but also rejuvenate the environment for future generations.

MPDD aims to support dairy farmers by offering technical expertise and financial aid, enhancing productivity, milk quality, and bolstering the farmers' economic standing. This collaboration includes training sessions on sustainable farming practices, basic cow healthcare, financial support for farm equipment, and shed improvements.

To date, the MPDD team has played a vital role in assisting 26,000 dairy farmers in East Java, aiming primarily to elevate productivity, refine the quality of fresh milk, and advocate for environmentally conscious farming practices.

In addition, the company has moved to address issues such as environmental health, sustainability and community welfare.

Nestlé Indonesia has assisted in the construction of over 8,600 biogas units, which convert cattle waste into renewable energy for household use. The initiative is also collaborating with Yayasan Rumah Energi to assist local dairy farmers in implementing biogas units at their residences, curbing carbon emissions within farming areas. This energy could also be used as a medium for cooking and it certainly helps the local inhabitants to generate electricity for the cattle farm.

The byproduct from the process is also utilized as organic fertilizer, enriching the fertility of livestock feed crops. This comprehensive waste management system aligns with Nestlé’s vision to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Alongside establishing best practices for dairy farmers, the initiative also takes into account the availability of natural resources surrounding the farms. Since 2008, Nestlé Indonesia has constructed eight clean water access points, which has not only benefited the farms, but also contributed in improving public health within local communities who live  around the company’s operational areas, impacting approximately 2,300 families.

Additionally, Nestlé partnered with USAID for the Indonesian Urban Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (IUWASH) program, which involved the construction of 100 infiltration wells to capture rainwater, each capable of holding up to 8,000 liters. The provision of clean water aids farmers in maintaining healthier livestock, indirectly contributing to enhanced milk quality.

Looking ahead, Nestlé remains committed to sustained collaboration with local dairy farmers, aiming to create mutual benefits, generate employment opportunities, and contribute to Indonesia's economic growth through the production of high-quality food and beverages from much-loved brands like Dancow, Bear Brand, Milo and Nescafe.
