SKK Migas expects Mubadala Energy, the UAE-owned operator of the Tangkulo-1 exploration well, to accelerate development of the newly discovered gas deposit to start production in the next four years.
SKK Migas chairman Dwi Soetjipto expressed his hope that gas production at the block would start in 2028.
“We will discuss with [Mubadala]. We hope that perhaps the plan of development [POD] can be finalized this year,” he said on Tuesday, on the sidelines of the Indonesian Petroleum Association’s 48th IPA Convention and Exhibition (IPA Convex) in Tangerang, Banten.
“We hope [the block] can get onstream as soon as possible, with accelerated implementation,” Dwi added.
The government aims to push upstream oil production to 1 million barrels of oil per day (bopd) and gas production to 12,300 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd) by 2030 to reduce its reliance on costly oil and gas imports.
This effort has been met with various challenges, however: The country’s wells are aging, new reserves have been hard to come by and recent discoveries have only slowed the general decline in production.
Mubadala Energy announced on Monday that its Tangkulo-1 exploration well had discovered a natural gas deposit in the South Andaman Block, located around 100 kilometers off northern Sumatra, with potentially more than 2 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of original gas in place (OGIP).
