/o:p>The Upstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Task Force (SKK Migas) plans to ask the United Arab Emirates’ Mubadala Energy to expedite development of the South Andaman Block, after the Abu Dhabi-owned oil and gas giant announced it had discovered a second gas deposit there.

SKK Migas chairman Dwi Soetjipto expressed his hope that gas production at the block would start in 2028.

“We will discuss with [Mubadala]. We hope that perhaps the plan of development [POD] can be finalized this year,” he said on Tuesday, on the sidelines of the Indonesian Petroleum Association’s 48th IPA Convention and Exhibition (IPA Convex) in Tangerang, Banten.

“We hope [the block] can get onstream as soon as possible, with accelerated implementation,” Dwi added.

The government aims to push upstream oil production to 1 million barrels of oil per day (bopd) and gas production to 12,300 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd) by 2030 to reduce its reliance on costly oil and gas imports.

This effort has been met with various challenges, however: The country’s wells are aging, new reserves have been hard to come by and recent discoveries have only slowed the general decline in production.
