T Amman Mineral Nusa Tenggara (AMNT), a subsidiary of publicly listed mining firm PT Amman Mineral Internasional, said it saw a possibility to process imported copper concentrate from foreign mines.

The company is also considering the possibility of processing copper concentrate from other local mining companies to meet the country’s downstream mandate.

“We are considering the possibility of importing copper concentrate when there are issues in our production or if the mine has to be [temporarily] shut down,” said AMNT’s president director Rachmat Makkasau on Wednesday, as quoted by Bisnis.

“So, we could be like Korea and Japan, we could import concentrate from Chile to produce copper cathode in Indonesia, for example,” he added.

However, the firm explained that it would be selective in receiving external supplies of copper concentrate, as its smelter had specific requirements for the input specifications.

AMNT is the operator of Batu Hijau mine in West Nusa Tenggara, the second-biggest copper and gold mine in Indonesia. The firm has started constructing a smelter in the same area, operated by its sister company PT Amman Mineral Industri.

The smelter, built with a US$1.4 billion investment, could process 900,000 tonnes of copper concentrate per year with output of 222,000 tonnes of copper cathodes and 830,000 tonnes of sulphuric acid per year.
