A

s of September 2024, the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) reported a total of 6 million stock investors with single investor identifications (SIDs), an increase of over 744,000 investors from 2023.

Local investors continue to dominate the IDX, holding 51.5 percent of shares, while foreign investors account for 48.5 percent. Individual ownership remains significant, representing 53.3 percent, with domestic institutional investors holding 38.3 percent and institutional investors overall controlling 46.6 percent.

IDX president director Iman Rachman said this growth reflected strong confidence in the Indonesian capital market despite ongoing global and domestic economic uncertainties.

Iman also emphasized that the IDX was actively exploring new opportunities regarding products and supply and expanding the investor base.

"Retail investor participation has still been maintained, with overall domestic investors still dominating, both in terms of ownership and transactions," Iman said in an official statement on Thursday, as quoted by katadata.co.id.

The IDX is also actively implementing strategies to attract more investors, promote growth in the capital market, and participate in stock endowments or waqf.

A waqf stock is a modern form of Islamic endowment where shares or investment profits are donated for charitable purposes, such as supporting social projects in education and health care.

Irwan said that 95 percent of capital market investors were retail and primarily from the younger generation. He believes this group, driven by aspirations to become wealthy, presents significant potential for promoting stock endowments.

"This is the market we are focusing on, raising awareness that philanthropy can be conducted in the stock market, including through stock endowments," Irwan said at the Sharia Finance and Economics Symposium on Thursday, as quoted by bisnis.com.
