he new administration has allayed fears that the Nusantara Capital City (IKN) project could be placed on the back burner following its conspicuous absence in President Prabowo Subianto’s hour-long inauguration speech.
After decades of mulling a move away from the fast-sinking capital Jakarta, then-president Joko “Jokowi” Widodo finally decided in 2019 to carve out a city in Kalimantan that would become the new seat of government.
Having won February’s election with a boost from Jokowi, Prabowo seemed intent on seeing through his predecessor’s crowning legacy up until the transfer of power on Sunday.
But the lack of any mention of the megaproject in the President’s speech on Sunday raised fresh doubts about its place in the new administration.
A flurry of officials have since sought to dismiss concerns about the uncertain future of the project.
IKN Authority spokesperson Troy Pantouw told The Jakarta Post on Monday that “there was no doubt that IKN development will continue.”
Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni, who previously led the IKN Authority together with former public works minister Basuki Hadimuljono, insisted on Monday that Prabowo remained strongly committed to the megaproject.
