LN says it will build Southeast Asia’s largest green hydrogen plant in Sumatra with the help of Sembcorp Utilities, a wholly owned subsidiary of Singapore-owned Sembcorp Industries.

The state-owned power company’s primary energy arm, PLN Energi Primer Indonesia (PLN EPI), is to undertake the project after signing a joint development agreement on Monday with its Singaporean counterpart at the Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW).

“The project signed will become the first and the largest hydrogen hub in Southeast Asia. This is a real commitment in reshaping the energy landscape in the region,” Hartanto Wibowo, PLN's director of corporate planning and business development, said in a press statement on Wednesday.

Hydrogen is the most abundant substance in the universe, and when it burns, the chemical element generates energy through heat, with water as a by-product.

Energy created from hydrogen produces no carbon dioxide, which makes it one of many potential energy sources that could help reduce carbon emissions and slow global warming.

However, bringing hydrogen about and transforming it into a useful format itself requires energy, which may not necessarily come from renewable sources.

For hydrogen to be called “green”, the energy used for its production in a process called electrolysis must come from renewable sources, like wind, solar or hydropower.
