Indonesia's G20 Sherpa leads negotiations during the final leg of Brazil's G20 presidency

T

he G20 presidency of Brazil has entered the final stage of the G20 Leaders’ Declaration negotiation process. Starting on Nov. 12, the Sherpas from G20 member countries gathered in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to begin a series of negotiations aimed at reaching an agreement on the G20 Leaders’ Declaration.

Edi Pambudi, deputy for coordination of international economic cooperation at the Coordinating Economic Ministry and the Indonesian G20 Sherpa, led the Indonesian government delegation during the 4th Sherpa meeting under Brazil’s G20 presidency. Previously held under Brazil’s presidency were three Sherpa-level meetings and several intersessional meetings to discuss priority issues, outcomes from the working group discussions and negotiations regarding the G20 Leaders’ Declaration.

“The final Sherpa meeting during Brazil’s presidency is quite challenging. Brazil has effectively sought to amplify the G20 forum’s focus on addressing the needs of developing countries amid high global uncertainty. Brazil’s presidency has benefited from Indonesia’s efforts in 2022 to maintain the unity of the G20. The G20 has once again been able to reach a consensus at the working group level in preparation for the ministerial meeting,” said Edi.

The G20 presidency of Brazil in 2024 adopted the overarching theme of “Building a Just World and Sustainable Planet”, with the following main priorities: Fighting inequality, promoting social inclusion, fighting hunger, combating climate change, promoting energy transition and sustainable development, as well as reforming global governance institutions. These priorities are closely linked to the voices of developing countries, addressing real issues faced by the global community.

Earlier, on November 11, a Sherpa meeting of emerging market economies (EMEs) was held. This forum aimed to create a balance between developed and developing countries within the G20. Brazil expressed appreciation for the support provided by the EME group, which has enabled it to deliver tangible outcomes for developing countries.

The 4th Sherpa meeting under Brazil’s G20 presidency is scheduled to take place from Nov. 12-15 at the Prodigy Hotel Santos Dumont in Rio de Janeiro. This meeting is expected to produce the G20 Leaders’ Declaration, which will be adopted by the G20 leaders at the next summit on November 18-19, also in Rio de Janeiro.
