RI, India ‘not doing enough’ in education, Indian ambassador says Indian Ambassador to Indonesia Sandeep Chakravorty delivers his speech on 75 years of India-Indonesia diplomatic ties during the Jakarta Futures Forum, cohosted by the Observer Research Foundation (ORF) and the Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia (FPCI) in collaboration with the Embassy of India on May 2-3, 2024, at JW Marriott Hotel Jakarta in Setiabudi, South Jakarta. The Indian ambassador to Indonesia has called for intensified bilateral cooperation in the field of education.

While acknowledging the two countries’ “interaction for hundreds of years” in economic and cultural relations, education still remained an unexploited opportunity, “We are not doing enough in education,” Ambassador Sandeep Chakravorty told The Jakarta Post on Thursday.

“I would ideally encourage [India’s] higher education institutions to open campuses here, because there is a huge demand and [Indonesians] are welcoming of Indian institutions,” Chakravorty said, noting that both countries had failed to develop the full potential of educational partnerships.

With a large number of Indonesian students seeking educational opportunities abroad, particularly in English-speaking countries like Australia and the United States, India presented an attractive alternative, he continued.

During President Prabowo Subianto’s recent visit to India, along with several cabinet ministers, bilateral ties in the education sector were among the topics he and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed.

In his meeting with Modi, Prabowo expressed appreciation for the growing number of Indonesian students in India and encouraged Indian educational institutions to open branches in Indonesia.
