tate asset fund Danantara has signed a head of agreement (HoA) with Chinese battery materials giant GEM to jointly develop a high-pressure acid leach (HPAL) smelting facility with an annual capacity of 66,000 tonnes of nickel in mixed hydroxide precipitate.
The US$1.42 billion project, to be funded through the agency’s subsidiary Danantara Investment Management, is part of the country’s efforts to build an electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem by expanding domestic processing of nickel, a key battery material.
The HPAL smelter is part of GEM’s collaboration with Vale, first signed in November 2024, aimed at securing nickel resources and advancing their broader plan to develop integrated nickel processing and refining facilities with supporting infrastructure in the Morowali nickel hub of Central Sulawesi.
After the deal, Danantara would join the collaboration alongside the potential involvement of other global partners.
“By joining forces with a global pioneer in green metallurgy, we are advancing the country’s downstream agenda while ensuring sustainability and innovation remain at the forefront,” said Danantara CEO Rosan Roeslani in a statement.
Beyond nickel processing, the long-term vision covers cathode materials, battery cells, high-quality nickel plate and heavy equipment manufacturing.
