A

regulation is in the works to govern the welfare of ojol (on-demand motorcycle transportation drivers), a move that signals direct government intervention in the fare structure of on-demand services companies such as Gojek, Grab and Maxim.

State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi said the regulation was being drafted following a direct order from President Prabowo Subianto to address long-standing issues regarding driver welfare and market competition.

“This regulation will cover various aspects, from drivers’ employment status and fare rules to social protection for our ojol partners,” Prasetyo said on Friday, as quoted by Bisnis.com.

He added that the new policy would take the form of a presidential regulation (Perpres) to expedite implementation.

When pressed about a possible timeline, Prasetyo expressed confidence that the regulation would be finalized within the year.

“As soon as possible,” he continued, “but there are some [aspects] we still need to evaluate. In general, [the draft regulation] is almost ready.”
