he government has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a Singapore-based energy and commodities trading company to support cooperatives in building a used cooking oil (UCO) ecosystem in Indonesia.
Cooperatives Minister Ferry Juliantono, along with the Indonesian Cooperative Council (Dekopin), signed the MoU on Tuesday with Mercantile & Maritime Energy Pte. Ltd., (MENA), during a ceremony at the ministry’s offices in South Jakarta.
MENA founder and CEO Murtaza Lakhani said the collaboration was a first step in the company’s long-term investment in Indonesia’s circular economy.
Lakhani stated in a press release that the company “will keep investing in cooperatives and sectors which get less attention from investors, including development of the UCO ecosystem”.
The MoU expresses initial commitment to a cooperation umbrella for strengthening cooperatives as key players in the UCO value chain. It covers mapping and data exchange as well as building literacy, funding access and marketing toward a pilot project.
Through the cooperation, Ferry said, “Cooperatives are pushed to be part of a digitalized modern supply chain and connected to the global market.”
“The government will facilitate so the economic and environmental benefits can be enjoyed by the public,” the minister added.
Dekopin chairman Bambang Haryadi welcomed the MoU as an opportunity to increase the competitiveness of local cooperatives.
“Dekopin will map the cooperatives that are ready to receive funding access, assistance and better absorption guarantee,” he said. (nvn)
