t has been almost two years since The Witcher first aired on Netflix and fans are excited for the show’s return with a new season this December.

The Witcher is based on a book series written by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski. Prior to becoming a Netflix hit, it first gained popularity among gamers through its fantasy role-playing game (RPG) adaptation in 2007.

The Witcher’s storyline focuses on Geralt (Henry Cavill) of Rivia, a solitary monster hunter enhanced by magic who wants nothing more than to protect people. Geralt’s life becomes complicated when destiny brings him to Yennefer of Vengerberg (Anya Chalotra), a powerful sorceress, and Geralt’s Child of Surprise, Princess Cirilla or Ciri (Freya Allan).

Cavill, who shot to stardom for his role as Superman in Man of Steel and recently took on the role of Sherlock Holmes in Netflix’s Enola Holmes, told The Jakarta Post through a virtual interview on Nov. 26 that he enjoyed portraying Geralt.

“I really enjoyed playing a character like Geralt; he's not one regular hero, so he's fun in that way. Superman is all good all the time, so he's the perfect example of an ideal [hero], while Geralt seems to be a real-life example of a hero — where he's living in an incredibly tough world but the world doesn't allow him to be that. For me, as an actor, it provides a lot of interesting perspectives to play such an interesting character,” Cavill said.

The first season ended with the epic Battle of Sodden Hill, with the last scene showing Geralt meeting Princess Cirilla. With such an ending, the second season is set to explore the relationship of Geralt and Ciri. Geralt will also take Ciri to his safe place, Kaer Morhen, the home of the witchers. The relationship between the two is also hoped to add more dimension to Geralt’s character, who grunts and swears more than he speaks in the first season.

“We will get to see the relationship between Geralt and Ciri. It wasn't explored before and it will now, and it will definitely influence the dynamic,” Cavill told the Post
