Gaga is now a defendant in a drink-driving case that caused a serious car crash and paralyzed his ex-girlfriend, Instagram celebrity Laura Anna, for years until her death in December 2021.
ast Jakarta prosecutors have demanded that Instagram celebrity Gaga Muhammad be punished with four years and six months of imprisonment, as well as a Rp 10 million (US$696) fine. Gaga is now sitting as a defendant in a drink-driving case that caused a serious car crash and paralyzed his ex-girlfriend, also an Instagram celebrity, Laura Anna, for years until her death in December 2021.
“The defendant is found guilty of negligence that disabled Laura [...] The defendant was found driving under the influence of alcohol,” the prosecutors read their charges on Tuesday.
Article 310 of Law No.22/2009 on transportation stipulates that negligence in driving that causes injury or death of a passenger can be punished with a maximum of five years' imprisonment. The prosecutors commented that Gaga was still “young and polite [...] and should be able to atone for his mistakes.”
Gaga and his then-girlfriend Laura Anna were involved in the car crash after a night of partying in December 2019. Laura went into a coma, while Gaga walked out of the car virtually uninjured. It was later found out that Laura had dislocated one of her cervical vertebrae in the crash, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down ever since.
The incident made their romance turn sour, while the case gradually turned into a family feud and then finally a legal battle. Laura’s family and the East Jakarta District Court finally built a case against Gaga in 2021, two years after the incident, after becoming convinced that Gaga and his family had no intention to atone for the tragedy. Sadly, Laura passed away on Dec. 15, two weeks after delivering her witness testimony to the court. She was 21.
Laura’s remains were cremated and her ashes were spread off the shore of Ancol, North Jakarta.
