T

he holy month of Ramadan is one of the most anticipated times for Indonesians. This undeniable fact is clearly reflected on Google Trends.

"The keyword 'Ramadan' is one of the most popular in Indonesia," Feliciana Wienathan, communications manager of Google Indonesia, revealed during a press conference at Café Cali in Jakarta on March 14.

"As we’ve observed on Google Trends, searches for Ramadan-related topics have been continually rising over the past five years, especially as the holy month approaches.”

In 2023 and 2024, Indonesia also ranks among the top two countries globally with the highest number of searches for keywords “Idul Fitri” and “puasa”, or fasting.

Among these keyword searches are several popular topics, including “ceramah singkat Ramadhan dan judulnya” (Ramadan short sermons and their titles), “Lebaran fashion”, “recipes for sahur [predawn meal] and iftar” and “puncak arus mudik 2023” (peaks of homecoming traffic in 2023).

“Many people are perhaps already planning for mudik [exodus] and seeking to learn from last year’s experience,” Feliciana commented.

In addition, searches about community-based leisure activities such as “sports calisthenics” and “carpet tufting” have also witnessed a notable surge on Google over the past couple of months.
