The fifth edition of the biennial performing arts festival seeks to offer an alternative space to liberate audiences from the political dynamics sweeping the nation during an election year.
rtists presented liberating performances at this year’s edition of the biennial Salihara International Performing Arts Festival (SIPFest) amid talk about the return of the New Order, an era characterized by repression and oppression.
SIPFest 2024 was themed “Orde Seni Baru” (A New Art Order) and ran from Aug. 3 to 31 at the Salihara Arts Center in Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta.
Salihara program director Nirwan Dewanto told a press briefing on July 24 that the festival’s theme referred to a free and liberating alternative world that was separate from politics.
“Art is both surprising and delightful, opening up a space for creativity that is closed by [political] power. We dream of another order through art,” he said.
“The theme wants to celebrate the growth of art.”
Curated by composer Tony Prabowo and artist Hendromasto Prasetyo, SIPFest 2024 had 10 events, which include nine evocative spectacles featuring young artists from Indonesia, Australia, Germany, South Korea and Malaysia. The 10th was an enlivening discussion about the journey of veteran actor, director and all-around artist Landung Simatupang.
“I chose four shows which offered novelty including Landung Simatupang, who created a theatrical production for the first time,” Hendromasto told The Jakarta Post.
