n Indonesian-language translation of an award-winning book detailing how Israel has used Palestinian territory to test its military technologies has just been published by Marjin Kiri.
Beyond the occupation and alleged genocide documented by a United Nations commission, Israel also used Palestine as a testing ground for its weapons and surveillance technologies before marketing them abroad.
Journalist and author Antony Loewenstein, a Sydney-based freelance investigative journalist who has covered the Israeli-Palestinian conflict for 20 years, details these practices in his book The Palestine Laboratory: How Israel Exports the Technology of Occupation Around the World.
Airstrikes involving fighter jets and missiles, along with a ground operation using loitering munitions and other weapons, have been pounding Palestinian territory during Israel’s military campaign, which has killed at least tens of thousands of civilians.
Israel has also installed CCTV cameras across occupied areas, deployed drones and used data-gathering tools to constantly monitor Palestinians.
Loewenstein said during a discussion of his book at the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) on Nov. 20, that weapons and surveillance tools first deployed to control Palestinians were later marketed as “field-proven” products. European countries became Israel’s largest buyers, particularly after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
He added that surveillance tools have also become a diplomatic lever for Israel, with some Arab states having also purchased them despite a public expectation from their citizens to support Palestinians.
