Formula E invigorates passion for EVs in Indonesia

T

he prestigious Formula E World Championship was held in Jakarta for the second time on Saturdays. Allianz served as the event’s official insurance partner as the insurance company’s commitment to a sustainable future and environmentally friendly mobility with low carbon emission consumption.

In addition, Allianz is also the title sponsor for the Allianz Fan Village, a place that provides education on the topic of sustainability, invites the public to care more about the environment and provides entertainment and free mineral water at the hydration center, for a complete and interactive Formula E experience for all visitors. The partnership is an opportunity for Allianz to create innovative ways to inspire and interact with Formula E fans.

Rounding up the event under the hashtag #TerbaikBagiBumi, loosely translated as the best for Earth, Allianz took it upon itself to raise awareness about sustainable living as Indonesia’s leading insurance company.

“At Allianz, our mission is to protect our customers' future through relevant and comprehensive insurance solutions. Sustainability is also a key component of our corporate DNA, and we are proud to be affiliated with Formula E. It is the first sport in the world to be net-zero carbon from its inception, and is an organization that supports environmental care and social progress,” said Alexander Grenz, country manager and main director of Allianz Life Indonesia.

"I also hope all teams and drivers will enjoy a safe and exciting race experience at the Jakarta E-Prix and the public will have a pleasant experience at the Allianz Fan Village this weekend," he added.

As the world is finally settling back into the new normal after the pandemic, the Indonesian National Police recorded an increase in the number of motorized vehicles in Indonesia by 152 million units, or more than half of Indonesia's population as of Jan. 3. This figure is a notable increase compared to 2020, with 136 million units.

With the return of activities and vehicle mobility, the air quality index for big cities, including Jakarta, had decreased. As of June 2022, the Air Quality Index (AQI) report from the UCAR Center for Science Education recorded the cities with the highest levels of pollution in the world, putting Indonesia’s capital city in the company of Delhi, Beijing, Kuwait and more. These figures exceed the clean air standard set by the World Health Organization (WHO) with a PM2.5 threshold.

In order to get the AQI back to a healthy amount, the Indonesia government has high hopes for the transition to electric vehicles (EVs) for the people of Indonesia. Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi revealed the use of EVS could also save on operational costs, not only individually, but also regionally and nationally.

With more people transitioning to EV in 2023, effort is also being made on the part of the government to encourage the development of supporting infrastructure for EVs, such as EV charging locations in public places. Data from the Transportation Ministry show the number of EVs being used in Indonesia as of March was 56,988 units. Meanwhile, the Indonesian Electric Motorcycle Industry Association (Aismoli) noted as of now, there were 52 Brand Holder Agents (APM) for electric motorbikes.

"Seeing the growing interest and needs of the community, we welcome the increasing use of electric vehicles. We are committed to providing protection according to the needs of the community. For this reason, we developed electric vehicle protection from existing products and provided additional protection adapted to changes in electric vehicle components. We also always follow the development of guidelines related to electric vehicle protection that are being prepared by the association in collaboration with regulators," said Sunadi, president director of Allianz Utama Indonesia.
