T Pertamina (Persero) presented its strategy to become a regional leader in the carbon capture and storage (CCS) business during the 2024 International & Indonesia CCS Forum (IICCS) at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC) in Senayan Subdistrict, Jakarta, on July 31, 2024.
Pertamina's aspiration to develop its CCS business is based on the large CO2 storage potential in Indonesia with a capacity of more than 570 gigatonnes, especially in saltwater aquifers. Pertamina has prepared a road map until 2060 for the CCS business.
Coordinating Maritime Affairs and Investment Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan gave his full support for Pertamina's CCS business development initiative.
"Presidential Regulation No. 14/2024 on CCS activities shows our commitment and seriousness in implementing this technology as part of the government's decarbonization initiative," Luhut said.
He added that the government will support strong regulations and partnerships for the success of CCS implementation.
"We understand that CCS requires support from many parties. Therefore, we are leading efforts to implement CCS in Asia to accelerate the necessary derived regulations," Luhut added.
The coordinating minister also emphasized the potential of CCS as a promising business by inviting foreign investors to participate in projects in Kalimantan and other areas.
"With Indonesia's strategic position and extensive storage capacity, we are confident that this CCS initiative can make Indonesia a leader in this field," Luhut said.
Pertamina Strategy, Portfolio and Business Development (SPPU) Director A. Salyadi Saputra said CCS technology is very important for reducing emissions amid Indonesia's challenges as a greenhouse gas producer.
"Pertamina believes that Indonesia can achieve the NZE [net-zero emissions] target by 2060 and become a leader in the energy transition in the Asian region through CCS technology," Salyadi said.
He added that Pertamina has prepared a road map for CCS development in three stages. In the first stage, which will run until 2030, Pertamina will seek to build domestic capabilities through technical studies and collaboration with stakeholders. In the second or medium-term stage for 2030 to 2040, Pertamina will aim to increase CCS capacity and develop CCS clusters to decarbonize domestic and cross-border operations. In the third or long-term stage for 2040 to 2060, Pertamina seeks to become a mature regional leader in CCS by integrating CCS hubs and expanding CO2 transportation infrastructure.
"We must balance increasing access to affordable and abundant energy with reducing environmental impacts. This is a challenge that we must face together," Salyadi explained.
He noted that Pertamina is currently developing 11 CCS projects with a targeted CO2 storage capacity of 7.3 gigatonnes and a targeted injection rate of around 7 million tonnes of CO2 per year by 2030. Examples of said projects include collaboration with ExxonMobil in the Asri Basin and the development of CCS hubs in East Kalimantan and Central Sulawesi.
"With support from all parties, Pertamina is ready to take a strategic role in the journey toward a greener and more sustainable energy future," Salyadi said.
Pertamina Corporate Communication Vice President Fadjar Djoko Santoso added that CCS and carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) are part of Pertamina's emission reduction programs, which spurs Pertamina to continue developing the right technology in the upstream oil and gas industry.
"The CCS program is part of Pertamina's business strategy to strengthen the decarbonization of its existing businesses. As a sustainable company, Pertamina's active participation in reducing emissions is expected to contribute to achieving the 2060 net-zero emission target," Fadjar explained.
