T Pertamina (Persero) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) have announced the signing of a letter of intent (LOI) to explore potential collaboration in the energy transition.
The signing was carried out at the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) Ministerial Meeting 2024 in Jakarta by Pertamina finance director Emma Sri Martini and JICA chief representative Takeda Sachiko.
The Indonesian government is committed to reducing carbon emissions and increasing renewable energy capacity to support the energy transition. As the economy grows, the need for sustainable and efficient energy becomes increasingly important. The collaboration between Pertamina and JICA aims to meet those needs through innovation and cooperation in several key aspects.
Pertamina and JICA will explore several potential collaborations, such as funding for transition and renewable energy projects, support for innovative research and pilot projects regarding the energy transition, human resource development through training and building technological partnerships for the application of energy technology in Indonesia. In addition, the LOI includes potential cooperation in the maritime and logistics sectors, as well as other potential cooperation avenues that ensure a holistic approach to advancing sustainability and energy efficiency.
“Pertamina has implemented two strategic initiatives as part of efforts to achieve the net-zero emissions (NZE) target by 2060, namely decarbonization and low-carbon business. To achieve that goal, Pertamina requires support from various parties, including JICA, which will accelerate the development of our capabilities, as well as the transfer of knowledge and technology. This signing marks the first milestone in the collaboration between Pertamina and JICA, and I hope that it will continue to strengthen the partnership between Indonesia and Japan,” Emma said.
Pertamina corporate communications VP Fadjar Djoko Santoso said Pertamina's collaboration with JICA was an important step toward sustainability.
"Through joint initiatives and the sharing of expertise, we are committed to encouraging the renewable energy transition and increasing Pertamina's efficiency," he said.
Similarly, chief representative of JICA Takeda Sachiko said JICA supported the energy transition in Asian countries based on AZEC.
“We are very pleased to have established a working relationship with Pertamina, which is expected to play an important role in Indonesia for achieving its decarbonization target,” he noted.
Through the collaboration, which plays an important role in the energy transition, Pertamina and JICA will contribute to the realization of Indonesia’s NZE 2060 target. This synergy is expected to pave the way for various joint initiatives, progressing the transition to renewable energy and improving the overall efficiency of energy projects.
